The Carnival of Beauty - The beauty of photographs

O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens...
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?...
O Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 8:1,3,4,9 (ESV)

Anyone who visits my blogs probably already knows that photography is my hobby , one of my favorite categories, and the main resource of my Sabbath posts here at Pollywog Creek.

My camera is nearly as important to me as my source of transportation, though at my best, I am still an amateur - a johnny-come-lately one at that. It was only my ability to purchase an inexpensive digital camera and use software to crop, save and store photos that photography became the serious hobby it is for me today.

My first digital camera was simple and inexpensive - and yet it was that camera that I used to capture the flower macro at the top of this post - a photo that surprisingly revealed the incredible beauty of a tassel flower - a weed by most standards - and one that I had never noticed before. Photography became the tool the Lord used to open my eyes to the abundant beauty that surrounds me every day - beauty I would otherwise miss.

One any given day I take hundreds of photographs of flowers, plants, trees, animals and even a few people that surround me, and I eagerly download them in anticipation of the treasures and evidences of God's glory that will be revealed - sometimes in the smallest and seemingly most insignificant and ordinary things.

The beauty of photographs extends far beyond what the Lord has shown me in this little place on Pollywog Creek, for it is the photographs of others that allow me to travel to the far corners of the world and see God's glory revealed in places I will most likely never see for myself.

The photographs taken by the Hubble telescope are some of the most amazing images of the work of God's fingers...the moon and the stars He set in place that testify of His glory and majesty - like this one or this one!

Finally, the beauty of photographs can be found in the legacy of the generations who have gone before me and the memories of those generations that the photographs they left behind rekindle for me...inspiring me to leave a legacy of beauty for the generations to come.

You are so talented. I have missed our 'chats'. ;) Your grandson is absolutely adorable. My babies were bald. Is he bald? I loooooove bald babies.

PS. I love that Jim Elliot quote! What a blessing to hear that tonight! There are so many times when we are absent even though we are "home". I love that song by Chris Rice that says something like "teach me the power of a moment". If we would come out of our forward-thinking daze long enough to live in the present, THINK OF THE MEMORIES WE COULD MAKE! ;)

Heather!!!! So good to hear from you. You are so sweet. Neither one of the babies are bald...in fact, they both have a lot of hair, though Gavin's has thinned out considerable. I love bald babies, too, but then I love them however the Lord sends them! =)

I am trying to finish a post on Chapter 4 of Claire Cloninger's "A Place Called Simplicity" that is about how we use, or mis-use, our time. It has been a wonderful reminder to me, as well as that Jim Elliot quote - a reminder I seem to need often.

I do hope you will come back to my neck of the woods again soon, dear friend!

What a beautiful photograph, Patricia! I thought it was a stock photo until you said that you'd taken it yourself! I am impressed! Flowers are fun to take close-ups of. I took a class in photography in college, and I've been spoiled by an SLR, which I do not own. So... I have been saving up for one so hopefully soon. :-)
