Saturday Photo Hunt - Metal
This week's photo hunt theme is metal and I am posting mine early for two reasons. The first reason is probably obvious to those of you who, like our family, recognize today as Good Friday, the day we remember Christ's sacrificial death on the cross. It just seemed fitting that I should post this photograph today.

The Great Cross
St. Augustine, Florida(The Oldest City in the United States)
The Great Cross in St. Augustine, Florida, is made of stainless steel and rises two hundred and eight feet above the marshes of the Matanzas River. The cross weighs 70 tons and consists of 200 stainless steel panels in various sizes. The tallest sections contain 1.6 ft. x 10 ft. panels 3/16 in. thick, while 4 ft. x 10 ft. and 5/16 in. thick panels cover the foundational section. The lower 65 feet of the Cross was filled with concrete to protect against potential damage from hurricane force winds.
According to the historical marker data base, The Great Cross marks the approximate site where in 1565 the Cross of Christianity was first permanently planted in what is now called the United States. The cross is a beacon of faith that reminds all who pass this way, by land or by sea, of the religious beginning of our nation. It was erected and dedicated by the Diocese of St. Augustine on the grounds of the Mission of Nombre de Dios during the city's 400th anniversary observances in 1965-1966.
In the photograph below, the arrow points to Louis and Emily who are standing near the granite base of the cross, and provides a better perspective on the cross' height.

The second reason that I am posting early is because I am, once again, going to be away from my computer most of the day on Saturday. Our friend Rose passed away very early Tuesday morning and her funeral is tomorrow. I'm so grateful that in Christ we have hope.

"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep." I Thessalonians 4:13-14Besides many friends and extended family, Rose leaves behind her husband Nick and her 16 year old daughter Amanda. Please remember Nick and Amanda in your prayers.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted." Matthew 5:4For "metal" photos from other Photo Hunt participants, please click on the Photo Hunter Banner or the Technorati PhotoHunt tag below. The theme for next week's Photo Hunt is: high.

GREAT!! I am always fascinated by big crosses! Did you know that one of my bucket lists is to stand at the foot of Jesus in Corcovado? His hands are outstretched, his figure resembling that of a cross. Very nice pic! Feel good! Very apt for the holy week..
Very beautiful and apt metal choice! It's huge indeed...

I am so sorry to hear that your friend passed away. I am sure she is in a much better place.
That cross is so huge. We have something like that here in the Philippines though its a concrete and metal structure, with an elevator in the middle to go up. Then one can either go to the left or right side of the cross. Its dedicated to those American and Filipino soldiers who died during WW2.
Have a great Easter Sunday, Patricia.
A blesses week, prayers go to your friend and the family.
The cross is really imposing.

I'm so sorry your Rose had to go... extra prayers for those she left behind.
Awesome photos... glad you mentioned the hurricane prevention... it was my first thought, imagining that cross flying through the air.
Blessed Easter to you and yours.
I am comforted by your post in several ways, particularly today. I have been to St. Augustine several times and have been at the foot of that cross. I look forward to my next visit one day. It's such a magnificent city. Also, my brother passed away 2 days ago and I'm trying to help my parents through this very painful time. Dad is 79, Mother is 73. They are both too frail to travel 1500 miles for the funeral next Tuesday and they are in such shock and grief that they have out-lived one of their children.
I will remember you, your friend Rose and her loved ones in my prayers.
Have a Blessed Easter.
Wow! what a lovely picture for this week theme, just keep it up and enjoy what you are doing!
Check mine also in HERE!!!
Happy Easter!
that's huge! and its metallic quality makes it very firm. historical and i see its importance in the city. thanks for sharing this.
I was coming by to see your entry. Better late than not.
Mama Bear
