Little flock...

Austin and Mason in Texas
"Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." ~ Luke 12:32
On the two-day drive home from Texas last month, I had a lot of time to think. I listened to my iPod and read and napped, but my thoughts constantly turned toward those two little boys I kissed goodbye and wondered how I could nurture a grandmotherly relationship with them from so far away.
Their lives are surrounded by many good and wonderful things - especially parents and grandparents who love and care for them deeply - but that does not diminish my desires to love on them or release me from the God-given responsibilities that come with being a "mimi."

Gavin in my Pollywog Creek Backyard
I thought about the time I am blessed to have with Gavin - the books we read, the games we play, and the things we talk about while sitting on my backyard swing, and I grieved knowing that those same experiences with Mason and Austin are not possible with so many miles between us.
So I prayed. And I dug into scripture (even my ESV Study Bible went with me to Texas) and though I was inspired and encouraged by many familiar passages that point directly to generational relationships, it was Luke chapter 12, verses 22-34, that grabbed me.
Aside from the leading of the Holy Spirit, I'm not even sure what trail I was on that led me to that particular passage or why I was compelled to consider it in light of my study topic. It might have been the tender words of Jesus in verse 32: "Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom." Jesus was (and is) clearly speaking to His followers, but the words "little flock" made me think of my own "little flock" of grandsons. So I re-read the preceding verses and that is when I began to understand what God might be showing me and I how I could use it to build relationships with my "little flock".

"Consider the ravens: they neither sew nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds!" (verse 24)
"Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass, which is alive in the field today, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, O you of little faith!" (verses 27-28)
Months ago I began creating a coloring book for the boys from some of the flower and animal photographs I have taken here on Pollywog Creek. A little gift for their Christmas stockings, I thought. But as I meditated on the verses from Luke 12 and thought about this post from my archives (you might want to go take a quick look), I realized that I could do so much more than a coloring book.
"Consider the Birds", "Consider the Flowers", "Storytime from Mimi's Backyard Swing".....
Beginning next week, I will begin posting a weekly "Letter from Mimi's Backyard" with a printable coloring page. The posts will likely (hopefully) be early drafts for a project in the works, and though they are initially intended for my "little flock", I hope other mama's and mimi's will feel free to use them (and kid test them), as well.

I love this, Patricia! Although I have no grandkids yet, I do have a great-niece that I pretend is one of my "grands". She just turned two.
I'm so looking forward to your sharing this project. Thanks!
I love this idea - and I love you, my dear for the way you exemplify being a Godly Mum and Mimi.
The Lord bless this beautiful and precious gift to your flock and to the flocks of others!
Love,
Dawn

Patricia,
I love the way your mind works... can tell you have homeschooled for so long. That list of curriculum brings back lots of memories. This is a great idea. The coloring pages are so cool. I can't imagine having to leave little ones but you are making the most of it with your creativity.
Yesterday while my little one and I were in the pool... without even looking up from what he was doing he says... "what kind of bird is that Mimi?" He was just listening to its call and asking me to identify. A few minutes later he reminds me to listen to the sound and named the bird. You gotta love their little minds.

What a wonderful idea!!! I love it.
And have I told you lately that your grands are just DELICIOUS?
There's a little country family in Montana that will really enjoy those coloring pages! I'm looking forward to them, and my daughter, who is a naturophile (is that a word?) will be tickled to the bottom of her dirty little toes...
Something else that you may want to do, and perhaps you already have thought of this, is to buy books and read them aloud into a tape recorder, using a little bell or other sound effect to tell them when to turn the page. It's not like reading stories to them sitting in your lap, but they will know the sound of your voice, and you can add all sorts of sound effects. The parents of one of my good friends did this, because they lived so far away, and the grandkids loved it.
No doubt it's hard being away... but even that makes the visits more special, no?
Great idea's... see, I don't believe, for a minute, you can retire your teaching hat ;-)
what a great idea, I'm sure your little flock will love it. I have a sister with grandchildren far away. She reads stories aloud and records it, then she sends the book and the recording to her grandchildren so they can hear grandma reading stories. She also has a web cam that she enjoys so much.
Oh, Patricia! How hard to leave these sweet little people waving in the rear view mirror!
Just today on Moody radio there was a lady talking about how to use technology to connect with your grandchildren. For the few minutes I was in the car, she was talking about inexpensive web cameras and how she uses them to read aloud to her grandchildren. Might be worth listening to... although I'm not even sure of the lady's name.
Also today, I got an email from my cousin who is teaching in Korea. He has just gone through a very, very difficult time, and I have been so concerned for him, since he knew no one in Korea. But in his note he told of how he has joined a BSF group and a church, and has a Christian neighbor whom he is able have rich theological conversations with. I wrote back and told him that I had cried--but the happy sort of tears-- hearing of how God had provided for my dear family member in a place so far removed from any of us.
Not that you want to in any way give your position as 'Mimi' to anyone else, but don't you think it's encouraging that God uses others from our 'family' when we can't be there??
This is such a wonderful idea Patricia! I just returned to your blog for a visit after a looong time, and I read your letter from Mimi's backyard "backwards", until I arrived at this page.
I absolutely love it!
