"I must try and cultivate an eye for life's mercies...
And life, while it has its ugly swamps, its vile weeds, and its sharp thorns,
has always its fair flowers to charm the eye with their beauty,
or to fill the air with their fragrance..."
Rev. John Flowers Serjeant, 1878

Memorizing scripture...

DSC06663
...with Beth Moore this year. This is how I am doing it - with a little brown field journal from Desiring God, colored pens and pencils (though yellow doesn't work well), and my ESV Study Bible. This is my first year memorizing scripture from the ESV Bible and it can sometimes be a challenge for me to re-learn a verse in a version that is different from what I have always used. The little brown field journals are the perfect size for taking with me any where I think I might have even a few minutes to concentrate. I need the constant repetition. There's no system to my underlining, annotating and equating - it's just what works for me at the moment. Tomorrow I will add another verse to the journal - I'm just not sure which one yet. What about you? Are you hiding God's Word in your heart (and mind) this year, too?

I know this doesn't go here, but did you see world net daily after you post on the cape coral tea party cancellation? http://wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=93372

it's on!

Can't ever find your links for delicious on your blog...might just be inept. ;) I can only get them through my google homepage subscription, so I thought I'd post the link here.

When I was young I went to a religous class sponsored by my church that had us memorize "master scriptures", about 20-30 each year of the four years I was enrolled. It is amazing how those scriptures have stayed with me. I've not tried to memorize since then, I just read the scriptures over and over and hope the passage I need comes to me. It also helps to have an index!

Jen, I don't put my delicious links on the blog anymore - just a link to the page with the posts I found noteworthy. The only people who know what I tag for delicious are those who subscribe to Pollywog Creek in a reader or who happen to click on the "I am pollywogcreekporch on delicious" link in the sidebar.

Thanks for letting me know about the World Net Daily article. I wasn't planning on attending the Cape Coral gathering, but found the whole scenario interesting. I do plan on attending the one in Ft. Myers on Tax Day.

Kaye - I have such a poor memory that I suspect that I will need to memorize and rememorize scripture til the day I go on to glory! =) I'm also rememorizing passages in a different version this year which makes for a new challenge.

I am memorizing scripture as part of the LPM challenge, as well, and I have a pretty journal to write them in, and illustrate them....or have my four year old illustrate. Those are much sweeter.

I also type the verse on a Word doc. and copy and paste it about 4 times, then cut them apart and tape them around the house. When I can say it straight through, I can take it down. Sometimes the sight of the verse taped onto things annoys me so much I work especially hard to get it down!

This has been good discipline for me and oh, what a blessing to have the Word bouncing around in my head and reinforcing my heart.

Thanks for helping me understand why I can't find the links. :) I have really enjoyed reading what you tag though. I've added a few blogs to my subscriptions because of them.

The situation was interesting and awful. I was just glad to see the WND article and thought you might be, too.

love the Scripture memory pictures. Inspiring!

I've been memorizing the book of Ephesians from the ESV. I'm in chapter 2 and I agree with you that it's hard to relearn the verses that you already know in a different version. I am, however, loving it. :)
