Still Saturday::we know better...

Most of us have grown up thinking that being loved means being made much of.

Our whole world seems to be built on this assumption. If I love you, I make much of you. I help you feel good about yourself. It is as though a sight of the self is the secret of joy.

But we know better.

Our happiest moments have not been self-saturated moments, but self-forgetful moments.

Paradise will not be a hall of mirrors. It will be a display of majesty. And it won't be ours.

Love is the labor--whatever the cost--of helping people be enthralled with what will satisfy them most, namely, Jesus Christ.

Still Saturday: death to the timid and dull...

_DSC0070-003
When Christ died for sins, he took from the devil his one lethal weapon: unforgiven sin.
Freedom from fear was the aim of Christ in doing this. By dying he delivered "all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery" (Hebrews 2.14)

The fear of death enslaves. It makes us timid and dull. Jesus died to set us free. When the fear of death is destroyed by an act of self-sacrificing love, the bondage to boring, bigheaded self-preservation is broken.
We are freed to love like Christ, even at the cost of our lives.

Still Saturday::the best life...

_DSC0184-001
[Christ] died to produce in us a passion for good deeds. Christian purity is not the mere avoidance of evil, but the pursuit of good.
When God's forgiveness and acceptance have freed us from fear and pride and greed, we are filled with a zeal to love others the way we have been loved. We risk our possessions and our lives since we are secure in Christ.

Christ died to make us...passionate to help the poor and the perishing. It is the best life, no matter what it costs us in this world: They get help, we get joy, God gets glory.

"You...have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God." {Romans 7.4}

Still Saturday::to rejoice in suffering...

_DSC0021

_DSC0007

What does it mean that because of Christ's death for us God will certainly with him graciously give us "all things"? It means he will give us all things that are good for us. All things that we really need in order to be conformed to the image of his Son (Romans 8.29). All things we need in order to attain everlasting joy.

It's the same as the other biblical promise: "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). This promise is clarified in the preceding words: "In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:12-13).

It says we can do "all things" through Christ. But notice "all things" includes "hungering" and "needing." God will meet every real need, including the ability to rejoice in suffering when many felt needs do not get met.

Still Saturday::where will we turn?

_DSC0041

We can cut ourselves, or throw our children in the sacred river, or give a million dollars to [charity], or serve in a soup kitchen on Thanksgiving, or perform a hundred forms of penance and self-injury, and the result will be the same: the stain remains and death terrifies.

We know that our conscience is defiled — not with external things like touching a corpse, or eating a piece of pork. Jesus said it is what comes out of a man that defiles, not what goes in (Mark 7:15-23). We are defiled by pride and self-pity and bitterness and lust and envy and jealousy and covetousness and apathy and fear — and the actions they breed...they don't come from new life, they come from death, and they lead to death. That is why they make us feel hopeless in our consciences.

The only answer in these modern times, as in all other times, is the blood of Christ. When our conscience rises up and condemns us, where will we turn? Hebrew 9:14 gives us the answer: we turn to Christ.

We turn to the suffering and death of Christ — the blood of Christ. This is the only cleansing agent in the universe that can give the conscience relief in life and peace in death.

So here's what I'm giving up for Lent...

_DSC0023-001

Now before you start worrying about my salvation, let me assure you that there's no need. Jesus is my Savior, Lord and King. I have surrendered my life to him, as best I know how, and I'm in the process of allowing the Holy Spirit to conform me to His image.

I believe with all my heart that Jesus carried my sins to the cross where he lay down his life as the penalty for every stinkin' one of them {past, present and future} - just as he did for yours.

But here's the thing: I don't always live like it. For instance: I can believe in God's lavish unconditional love for YOU and I'll do all I can to convince you of that truth. But for me...I'm not always so sure.

Because here's the thing: I know me. I know all about me. Acutely aware of my failings - I can wear a cloak of shame til it's slap worn out. And like spinach between my teeth, I can be confident there are places where I'm totally missing the mark that you can see and I don't.

In other words, there are times that I can believe I clearly don't measure up, though I know full well that you do.

So what am I giving up for Lent? I giving up unbelief. Or put another way - I'm giving up the belief in lies about me that I know aren't true about you.

When faced with doubts about who I am - believing anything contrary to Truth - I'm in danger of creating an idol.
approved
If I truly believe that the righteous flourish like the palm tree....[and] still bear fruit in old age, I won't believe I'm too old to be used.

If I live out the truth that the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart, then I won't believe that my reflection in the mirror is a reflection of my worth.
Collages24
If I truly believe that I'm loved for who I am and not for what I do, then I won't believe I'm loved for my photography {or my banana chocolate-chip muffins} or fear not being loved if I can't or don't live up to the expectations of others.
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Galatians 2:20
Giving up unbelief isn't really giving up anything at all - except doubt, fear, worry, insecurity, perfectionism, envy, comparison...the list is endless.

So - I'm giving up unbelief for Lent.

And I've joined Jennifer Dukes Lee's Love Idol Movement and following her Love Idol posts {just wait til you see what Jennifer gave up for Lent} and I've pre-ordered a copy of her book Love Idol to give away here on Pollywog Creek after it's released on April 1st.

Still Saturday::He loves ME...

_DSC0007-001

Faded and dog-eared, the pink sticky note's been there at the top of our refrigerator next to the white message board for keeping a running grocery list and just above the Florida's Natural magnet for maybe ten years.

I don't remember when exactly. I don't remember the sermon that inspired it or who put it in my hand as I left church that day. I only remember that I don't ever want to forget that Jesus loves me - poor, pitiful me.
The death of Christ is not only the demonstration of God's love (John 3.16), it is also the supreme expression of Christ's own love for all who receive it as their treasure. The early witnesses who suffered most for being Christians were captured by this fact: Christ "loved me and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2.20). They took the self-giving act of Christ's sacrifice very personally. They said, "He loved me. He gave himself for me."

It's your Father's good pleasure...

Rebecca St. James and Emily

I tell it often, this story. Here, at retreats, in small groups and bible studies. Forgive me if you've heard it before. It's quite possible that I'm the one who needs to hear it again - this day after Easter when it was our Father's good pleasure to give us the Kingdom.

Several years ago, Emily and I interviewed Rebecca St. James for publication.  It was a unique and perfectly delightful experience. Rebecca's publicist provided books and posters and music, well in advance of the interview, and though we were familiar with Rebecca and her music, we did our research anyway - preparing ourselves to ask intelligent and relevant questions.

Our previous interviews with recording artists had been face to face - in the excitement and energy of a concert venue, but rather than fitting an interview into an already hectic performance night schedule, Rebecca conducted interviews by phone on a day she was traveling between concerts.

Waiting at home for her call was a little nerve-wracking, but Rebecca quickly put us at ease with comfortable and unhurried introductions. She patiently waited while we double checked our recording devices, prayed for all three of us before we began, and gave us her brother Joel's phone number so we could call him for concert passes to meet her and her family and take photos for the magazine.

Hours before the concert, Joel met us at the back door with our "all access" passes. He assumed we knew what we were doing and quickly excused himself to continue setting up the stage. We wanted to look and act professional, but we were "all-access" novices without a clue what we should do. We talked to people from the local Christian radio station we knew,  watched the crews set up the stage and listened to sound-checks.

After a while, we joined the bands for supper and pre-concert devotions led by Rebecca’s dad. We mingled during the meet and greet that followed, where I was thrilled to meet Evie Tornquist, one of Rebecca's mentors in the recording arts industry.

Our tickets were for seats close to the stage, but a stage extension had eliminated several rows of seats, and by the time we left the pre-concert meet and greet, the only place left close enough to take photos was on the floor in front of the stage. It was one of the longest and most painful concerts my fifty-something body has ever endured.

Several days later, we realized our failure to understand and appreciate the access we’d been given. A friend who had worked the concert asked how we enjoyed the experience. When I told her how hard it was to sit for hours on the floor in front of the stage, she asked, “Why didn’t you go backstage to take photos?”

“We could do that?” I asked.

“You could go anywhere you wanted to with those all-access passes."

All-access meant just that. With the exception of the stage during the performances and the private dressing rooms, we'd been given permission to go anywhere we wanted to at any time.
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
~ Matthew 27.50-51
At the moment of Christ's death on the cross, the curtain in the temple that had separated God’s people from His presence was torn from top to bottom, and an “all-access” pass to a relationship with the Father was written with the blood of Christ and offered to each of us.

Our "all access" passes to Rebecca's concert were inexpensive laminated cardstock clipped to a lanyard. When the evening with Rebecca was over, we returned them to Joel, and our access to Rebecca and the Smallbone family came to an end. The opportunity for interviews and photos was over. By the end of Rebecca's concert tour, those passes were useless.
But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
~ Ephesians 2.13
But because of Christ Jesus, our "all access" pass to the Father is priceless - bought with the blood of Christ, it has been sealed by the Holy Spirit for all eternity without expiration. Our opportunity to an intimate relationship with the Father will never come to an end
